The St. Sabestian Church at Aquem Alto, Margao, is covered under ASI.
Initially, the then Chapel could accommodate a congregation of approximately
250
people. In the year 1981, it was decided by the Fabrica of St. Sabestian to extend the Chapel, so as to accommodate approximately 600 people.

The work of extension of the Chapel was restricted due to the Chapel coming under
the ASI. The front portion could not be demolished, nor the back portion could
be extended due to the ASI restriction. Accordingly, the Chapel was build by
extending the sides and having a floor added to it. It is now felt, that even
with this modification of the Chapel, the area is not sufficient to accommodate
the ever growing number of parishioners. The Chapel has been elevated to the
status of a Church, on 3rd November 2002 by the Arch Bishop of Goa.

In order to cater to the spiritual needs of the parishioners, and specially
to help them participate in the Sunday Eucharistic Celebration, and for other
liturgical functions, it was found that the present Church was not sufficient.
Thus, a need was felt for a larger Church. The Fabrica of the Church, in
consultation with the Parish Council, felt the need as genuine and proposed for
the construction of a new Church complex on a plot adjacent to the existing
Church. The present Church will not be demolished, but will be used as a place
of worship of the Blessed Sacrament.

Thanking you,
